Nanaimo Fast Facts and Information
Nanaimo is centrally located on the East coast of beautiful Vancouver Island, within easy driving distances of many attractions. It was formerly called the hub city because of its location and its narrow picturesque streets that spread out from the downtown hub like the spokes of a wagon wheel. Formerly the site of a Hudsons Bay trading post the only remnant left is the Bastion which is now a museum. Be sure to watch this video
Formerly a coal mining town it is now known as the Harbour City, and has a beautiful waterfront walkway that goes from the downtown almost to the BC Ferry terminal, where you can watch the hustle and bustle of activities. Sea planes are constantly taking off, fishing boats and pleasure craft are plying the waters and the pickle boat ferries are crossing to Newcastle Island (a provicial park) and Protection Island a residential island with the Dingy Dock Pub the only floating pub in BC.
Nanaimo has many beautiful parks, nature reserves, trails (Nanaimo trails) and lakes within its boundaries. Buttertubs Marsh is a bird sanctuary with many varieties of waterfowl and Morrell sanctuary is a bird lovers paradise. There is Westwood lakes park with its many walking trails and Long Lake located almost downtown. Newcastle Island Provincial Park is a park with camping facilities and is also a marine park where boaters can moor their vessels and explore the island and Nanaimo.
Nanaimo has two excellent recreational centres with waterslide and wave pool in the Aquatic centre and a smaller slide in the Beban park pool. There is a new convention centre and museum under construction in the down town area and are getting ready for the influx of the cruise ship passengers and convention visitors.
Nanaimo has something for everyone.
