Want to Operate a Bed & Breakfast?

Learn how to be successful from an experienced operator.

Brooks’ Place Bed and Breakfast has been in operation since 1995. We have grown from just 25 room nights the first year to our goal number of 250-300 room nights per year. We have had guests from over 30 countries.

Seminar Details

Ethel taught with the Continuing Education program in Edmonton, (now Metro Community College) for 4 years where she found that there was a need for a weekend course for people interested in starting B&Bs from outside of the city. Instead of driving into the city for 3 weeks in a row, you can now come in for Friday night and Saturday, and the B&B experience is part of the course. This course is not limited to those from surrounding areas. Students from the city are also welcome.

Seminar Outline

We will answer questions such as the following:

How do I get started?
What is required of the operator?
What supplies do I need?
Where do I buy supplies?
What do I serve for breakfast?
Where do I advertise?
How many guests can I expect to have?
What security risks are there?
What are the Alberta Health requirements?
And much, much more.

There will be time for you to ask questions, discuss different cultures and religions and their requirements, cooking for those with health problems, etc.

You will sample a breakfast on Saturday morning, from one of the most popular menus served at Brooks’ Place Bed & Breakfast, discuss menus, and receive a recipe book with several of Ethel's favorite, easy to do breakfasts printed in it.

TIME: The course will run from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Friday night, and from 8:30 am on Saturday until we are finished. Usually around 2:30 – 3:00 so you can get an early start home. Breaks and snacks are included in the day's schedule.

Options and Costs

This course has been set up with two options.

Option I:

This includes the Bed & Breakfast experience, the course and handouts. Cost of this is $240 for a single and the spouse sits in for free. Register early to be sure to have this option. If I already have my rooms filled with registered students, then I have an arrangement with another B&B close by.

Option II:

This includes breakfast, course and handouts. Cost is $175 and the spouse sits in for free. (This is meant for people who live close by)

Comments from former Students

My husband and myself enjoyed the experience of staying at Brooks' Place. We learned so much. Ethel is a very good hostess and we can only hope to obtain the same standards. It was a great idea to do the course in the B&B as it enabled us to see both sides of running the business, how to start from scratch to become a lovely successful business.

Ethel's "Want to Operate a Bed & Breakfast?" training session covered all the bases. Everything from what to serve for breakfast to effective advertising. I highly recommend you let Ethel lead you through those first difficult steps in opening your B&B. Thanks!

I learned so much! I had no idea what was involved. I am really glad to have taken the course so that I won't have as many surprises when I start my own business.
